Joseph's story begins in Amsterdam, in the autumn of 1937.

From the memoir, My Early Years.

This is me

About Joseph

A few words from the author, and the story of a life lived far beyond its beginnings.

A hidden childhood in wartime Amsterdam, and a life lived far beyond it.

I was born in Amsterdam in 1937. When I was very young and the danger grew, I was taken in and hidden by a brave couple, Ali and Piet Van Haeringen. For safety I called them Aunt and Uncle, so that anyone who saw me would take me for their nephew and never suspect that I was a hidden child. For three years they kept me safe.

After the war, in time I built a life in New York, and later made my home in Israel. The two who saved me stayed dear to me always. Now, at last, I am setting these early years down on the page, so they are not lost.

My story

1937

Born in Amsterdam

Joseph is born in Amsterdam, in a city soon overtaken by war.

The war years

Hidden away

As a young child he is taken in by a brave couple, Ali and Piet Van Haeringen, whom he calls Aunt and Uncle to keep his true identity hidden, and is kept safe for three years.

After the war

A life rebuilt

In time Joseph builds a new life in New York, and later makes his home in Israel.

Today

Telling the story

Now, at last, Joseph sets his early years down on the page, so they are not lost.

Proof that it happened

The star I kept

This is the star I had on my coat when I was five years old. I always kept it, as proof to anyone who says it did not happen.

Joseph Obstfeld

Joseph showing the star to the interviewer in 2022, back in the same chair, telling his story eighty years on.

The hiding place

The closet

This closet stood beside the doctor's practice room. Twice, when Nazi officers came to see the doctor, Ali had to hide me in a hurry. She put me inside, locked the door, and kept the key tucked in her brassiere. I had to stay completely silent while the officers stood right beside the cabinet.

Look closely at the carving and you can see the serpent of medicine worked into the wood, the old sign for poison. The cabinet is in my home today. I brought it home after Ali and Piet had passed.

“And now I tell my friends, with a smile, that I came out of the closet.”
